Attitude is everything – You are in control

Attitude is EverythingAttitude is everything.  Yes it really is true.  What ever your attitude is toward a project or your goals.  Will decide whether you will be successful or not.

Can this really be true?  Is it really that simple?  Yes it really is.  But it is all up to you.  Change tour attitude change your life.

How can you change your attitude?  First thing is that you have to know what your attitude is now.  I am not talking about your minute by minute attitude.  We all know that like the weather that can change quickly.  I am talking about your overall attitude.  What is that?  How do you feel?  How do you look at life.  What is the long term outlook that is setting you on your path?

Attitude is Everything

If you made it here clearly you are looking for a way to change your attitude.  So something brought you here.  As with just about anything.  If you truly want to change your attitude.  You have to be willing to change.  Your attitude is everything.  You are in control of where your attitude goes from here.  This post is to help you see the path and stay on it.

The great thing about attitudes is that they are not set in stone.  At any time you can change it.

What is it that will change your attitude.  We can give you come pointers but in the end it is up to you.  To change your attitude you need to know what you want.   If you are like me you have had some trouble figuring that out.    To make you think about it we have a few questions for you. Questions to ask yourself

  1. What makes you happy?  Think about the things in your life that you really like to do.  Not only will this bring a smile to your face but it will help to give you some ideas on what will change your attitude.
  2. What things do you like to do that make you lose track of time?
  3. What makes you feel amazing about  yourself?
  4. Think of what were or currently are your favorite things to do?
  5. If you could teach someone something what would you teach?

After answering these quick questions you will have an idea of the things that make you happy.  This is what you can use to change that attitude.

You want to change that attitude from crappy to happy – here are a few things to do.

Change that tune

  1.  Have a morning routine –  This does not mean that you have to start the day exactly the same every day.  More that you think or do things that will start the day off right.  For an example think of something positive.  Ask yourself “How much am I going to Accomplish today?  Think of good and happy thoughts.
  2. Believe that you are able to change  – we have already established that attitude it everything.  In order to change that attitude you have to believe that you are able to change.  If you don’t have that belief there will be no way that you will be able to get that great attitude that you are looking for.  You have to actively strive for that great attitude.  Believe in the change and you will be on your way.
  3. Think about how a great Attitude will change your life – in order to change your attitude and make it stick.  It is important to know what it is that you want to achieve.   If you do not have a goal in mind then it will be like flapping in the breeze.

Goals or Desires – you make the call

Goals or DesiresGoals or Desires

Goals or desires which one are you?  We have talked a a lot about setting goals.  For some people that may not work.  Some people may need to change their train of thought.  It really all comes down to semantics.

Dictionary.com defines them as:

Goals – the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end. 

Desires – to wish or long for; crave; want. 

While they are not considered to be direct synonyms they are very close in their definition.

Are they goals or desires for you?

It all depends on how you think.  Who are you and how does your brain work?

What do you want to accomplish and how do you want to accomplish it?

Figure it out – we are here to help

Once you figure this out it will make it easier for you to construct your goals er desires.

Which ever you decide.  Is alright.   What ever will get you to the point of being able to accomplish what you want to do.  There is no wrong answer here.  If you want to call them goals then do it.  If you want to call them desires then do it.

The difficult part is to figure out which one you are.  You could be something else entirely (if you are let us know in the comments) but for this we are using these two terms and sometime you just have to make choices.

The document is in google drive.  Once you have it open you can save it in your drive if you use Google Drive or save it somewhere else on your computer so you can use it.  You can print it out to have a hard copy so you can write on it.  You can do it digitally if that is how you work.  The key is to just do it.

It does not matter if you decide on Goals or Desires.  The key is that they are both pointing to the same end.  Achieving what you want to get done.  In the end it all leads to you deciding to life the good life.

Write it down – The only way to achieve your goals

Write it downWrite it down.  Say it out loud.  Write it down.  Now do just that, write it down.

How many times gave you had a fantastic idea and you don’t write it down.  Then later that day or the next you think man that was a great idea.  Wish I could remember what it was.

We have all done it.  Every one of us thinks the same thing.  Wow if I could just remember that great idea.  Where would I be now?

That is why it is so important to write things down.

Lets say you don’t have any paper with you and a pen.  What could you possible do then?

Wait for it….

You have this device that I am sure you carry with you everywhere.   Your phone.  You know what your phone has on it?  A voice recorder.  It probably also has a note taking program.  If you don’t have these two apps on your device down load them now.  Easy as can be.  Now you can at least get that idea down till you can write it down.  You will at least have the basic idea that will trip the old grey matter in your head so the idea will not be lost.

Those are good to have.  Great when you are not in a spot to write the ideas down on paper.  As soon as you can get those ideas written down.

When you write them down they become more permanent and also become more real.  At least they do for me

It has been shown that writing things down can help to lead to action.  I may have just made that up but I am sure there is a study out there that shows this.  So I will change it to this.  In my experience writing things down helps me to get more things done.

Write it Down

Well I guess sometime there are extenuating circumstances.   So unless you are stuck in a haunted hotel writing things down leads to good things.

Why You Should get in the Habit of Writing Things Down

Your Memory Sucks

Very few people have a great memory.  I know everyone can remember things but really.  How much do you remember from day to day.  If you are anything like me you need clues to kick your mind into gear.  If you are writing things down your notes are the clues.

Ideas Fade

As time goes on.  Sometimes as little as a few minutes.  The ideas that you have start to fade and change.  You may have had the best idea that you ever had.  You think holy crap what a great idea.  It was not  written down.  You try and try to remember it.  It does not work.  Your idea is gone.  The amazing idea that you once had has faded into the ether.  If is still there but it is gone to you forever.  It really did not have to be that way.   If you had just written it down you would be on the way to what ever amazing idea or goal you would have had.

Save your Mental RAM

Like a computer we have limited RAM.  For you non computer geeks RAM stands for Random Access Memory.  This is the memory that your programs on your computer run in.  The more RAM you have the better your computer runs.  (well other things can help to but since this post is about writing things down we are focused here).  When you write things down you don’t have to keep the whole idea in your brain RAM.  You off load it to a page file so that when you are ready to process it you just have to take a look at it and BAM there it is the whole idea is back and you are ready to roll.

Focus Focus Focus

Staying focused on your goals is the key.  In order to break bad habits and start new good ones it will take time and focus.   Identify the things that are distracting you from your task?   Games, Movies, Television, Your Pet.  LOL  It is true it can be anything.

Write the distractions down.  Use the writing as a new distraction to distract you from the things distracting you…   That is quite the crazy sentence but if you read it again it actually makes sense.

You are starting a good habit to distract you from the bad habit.  So some distractions can be a good thing.  We will be going in to this more at a later time.

Be cautious but not too cautious

Don't be overly cautiousBe Cautious but not too cautious…  As I was driving to work today.  A day where we had some ice.  But not a lot of ice.  Something that is not really a surprise for a January in the Mid West.  I came up behind a car that was going 15 miles an hour on a road where the speed limit is 50.

Good they were being cautious.

Bad they were being way too cautious.

Being cautious to the point that their actions were actually becoming a danger to others.  In this case their overly cautious actions were causing dangerous conditions for others.  What if we look at this is a different way.  How are your actions affecting things for you?

If you are being overly cautious in your life, goals, decision making can and probably will lead to missed opportunities.

Getting past being overly cautious is not something that will be easy to do.  But trust me it can be done.  Being overly cautious can come about from many different things.  Mostly it comes about from habit and a fear of failure.  Once you can learn to overcome those two obstacles you free up time.  The non productive time that you spend thinking about the things that you wish you were doing.

Be decisive

What can you do about it?

You can do what ever you want about it.

It really comes down to weighing your options and deciding.  Should I be cautious about everything or should I take some risks.

You want to get something done.  But the cautious side of you says what if I fail?  Well then you fail.

The risk taking side of you says what if I succeed?  Well then you succeed.

That is all pretty obvious.  The thing to keep in mind is.  If you don’t try at all then the only thing that you will do is fail.

I am not saying that all risks are worth it.  There are risks where being cautious is the way to go.  Go back to our example at the beginning.  You are driving in some ice.   How bad is the ice.  How cautious should you be?   If you are being so cautious that it puts others in harms way then you are probably being too cautious.

What is it you want to do?  How do you want to get there?

Weigh the risks and make a choice.

If you make no choice then the choice has been made for you.

Eat more Bacon

I was watching a video about being cautious.   It was about whether you should eat a bacon sandwich every day.  The down side of eating a bacon sandwich every day was that it could increase your chances of getting cancer or increase your chances of death due to eating unhealthy food every day.

The upside being that bacon sandwiches are extremely delicious and make you happy because you are eating something good.

The risk – don’t eat it to avoid the negatives.  It turns out the negative was an extremely small risk of the cancer or dying early due to taking the risk.

He decided that the benefit of eating the bacon sandwich far outweighed the risks that were out there.  Yes there is risk but the risk is acceptably small.

You can apply this to the question of are you being overly cautious.

So as you set your goals in life  and come up with your plan to life the good life weigh the risks against the benefits.  This way you can help yourself to decide to get over being too cautious.

Someone once told me that worrying does nothing.  Except to make you more worried.

So move on and live your life.

How to decide to live the good life

decide to live the good lifeOne of the most difficult things to do is to decide to live the good life.  What do you really want and how are you going to get there?  There are so many questions to ask.  So many avenues to follow.   How can you possibly figure it all out.  Really it is overwhelming.  Or is it…

What are the steps you have to take to decide to live the good life?  It really all depends on you and how you are going to define the good life.  Sit down and write it out.  What is it that makes you happy?  You can figure it out.  Well you have to figure it out.  The only way that your path to the good life can be mapped out is to figure out what the good life means to you.

Write it Down

Write down everything that makes you happy.  When I say everything I mean everything.  There is nothing that it too silly to write down.  Think of this as a brainstorming session.  This is where you collect as many ideas as possible.  Take 5 or 10 minutes and write down as many things as you can think of.  Here is a document you can use.  You can download it here  Click on File and select Download As to save it in what ever format you like to use.  You can print it out of you want to write on it rather than type.  Either will work.  What ever is most effective for you.

Baby Steps

I am sure you have heard that before.  Baby steps will make it easier for you to figure out what it is that you need to do.  You can try to take giant strides or make amazing leaps.  But if you do this and fail then it will only end up slowing you down. Or worse yet leading to you giving up.

Taking baby steps does not mean that you move slowly.  It means that you break things up into smaller chunks.  By doing this you create smaller goals that are easier to attain and give you a much larger sense of accomplishment.  This will lead to you having more confidence.  Which will lead to you getting more done.

Once you decide what the good life if your you.  It will not just happen.  It would be really nice if it did.  There will still be work to do.  A lot of work.  Just deciding what you want it a huge step.  The thing that will make it different it the fantastic feeling you will have from accomplishing so much.


Living the good life takes persistence.  Of course if you are doing something you love than it make is much easier.  Do you want your life to feel like work or do you truly want to enjoy it?  When you enjoy what you are doing everything just seems to be much easier and makes you feel good about things.

How to decide to live the good life

So you have this list that you wrote down of the things that make you happy.  Now go through that list and narrow it down.  Eliminate the things that are unreasonable or unattainable at this point.  It is okay to have dreams in fact we encourage it but sometimes those dreams are going to have to be dreams for at least a while.  If you have not read the ten step plan you can find it here. Ten Step Plan to Help you Live the Good Life

Live the good lifeTo Live the Good Life is or should be the dream of everyone.  Of course your idea of the good life does not match mine.  That is ok.  Here is the list we follow on setting goals that can help lead to living the good life.   It will not necessarily be an easy path but having a path will make it much easier to get there.   Let us know in the comments how the plan is working for you.

10 (11) step plan on how to Live the good life

  1. What is the good life to you?  How to define what your idea of the good life is

Everyone’s idea of how to life the good life is different.  This is a good thing.   If everyone had the exact same idea then this would be a pretty boring world.  The beautiful thing is that even though everyone’s idea of how to live the good life is different.  You can use the same methods to figure out what the good life is to you.

Our journey here will help point those of you that choose to participate in the direction of living the good life that you choose.

2. Define intermediate goals to get to the good life – write them down

Once you have the main goals figured out. It will be important to define intermediate goals to get you there.  The intermediate goals are what will give you that sense of accomplishment along your journey to life the good life.  These goals can be as small or as large as you would like.  We recommend small goals so you achieve more.  Even if it is just perceived achievement.  As long as it is moving you along your path to the main goal then it is all good.

3.Walk away for a week and then re-evaluate your goals to make sure that they meet your true needs and values

At times you will get stuck or you will just not feel like you are achieving anything.  At those times it will help to step back and re-evaluate.   Maybe the goal you set is not moving you in the direction that you intended.  Or this goal may not be a goal you really want to achieve anymore.   This is all fluid.  Don’t be afraid to modify your goals.  If you stick with a goal that does not meet what you want then you are just getting yourself off your path to living the good life.

4.Establish a realistic timeline to meet your intermediate goals

If you try to do too much too quickly it is possible to burn yourself out.  If your burn yourself out it will derail your whole plan.  Then you will have to start over.  We don’t want to have to do that.  It is all about setting yourself up for success and attaining it.


5.Seek continuous education and self-improvement to help you reach each goal

As you are working on your path to living the good life.  You will come across many opportunities for continued self-improvement and education.  Take as many of these opportunities as you can.  Not only will this help you along your path.  It will provide you with more paths to take.  The more you learn the more you know.  LOL   sounds funny but if you think about it.  It is the truth.  The more you know the more opportunities you will have.

This may give you an even better idea of what you want to achieve in your path to the good life.

6.Reward yourself upon meeting each intermediate goal

A reward can be something simple.  It can be more extravagant when you reach a big goal.   It can be something as simple as a piece of candy.  Getting something for your self that you have wanted for a long time.  It could be as simple as just taking a few hours for yourself somewhere or just at home watching a movie.  Just something that is you saying thank you to yourself for getting that goal done.

It really does not matter how big or small it is.  Just something for you.

7.Surround yourself with positive advisers and friends.  Avoid doomsayers that will crush your path to the good life

Negativity can kill a lot of progress.  It can also stop you in your tracks.   This is not always an easy thing to do.  There will be all different types of people in your life.  There will be the ones that are always encouraging and then the ones who are always trying to tear things down.  We have all knows people like that.

It is possible tha the negative person is a family member or a close friend it will make things much more difficult.  Try to talk to them about their attitude and how it is affecting your life.   If that is not possible or they are unwilling to listen you may have to cut ties with them as much as you can.

8.Review and refine your goals to make sure you are following the path to the good life

Now that you have been moving along on your goal to live the good life.  It is a good time to review your plan again and find out where you stand.  Are you moving in the right direction?  Have you met the goals that you have laid out?

Reviewing your goals is an important and on going part of your plan.    The only way to know if you are moving toward your goal to live the good life.  Is to review and make sure that you are on track.  This is where you ask yourself.  How am I doing and do I need to change anything?

9.Ensure that you have not neglected self-improvement to reach material goals

Sometimes you will have to sacrifice something in order to attain your goal to live the good life.  The difficult thing here is balance.  If your goal is or starts to lead toward material things (we are not saying this is bad if that your idea to live the good life) is it causing you to neglect other things.   If your idea is to have nice things.  Did you buy something that was more expensive just to have something nice.  This could impair your ability to maintain your effort to live the good life down the road.

10.You have reached your goals enjoy the good life

At this point you have worked hard.  By now you have reviewed, refined and replenished your goals.  You are now at a point where you can live the good life.

To life the good life is a choice. You really can choose, it really is possible.  That does not mean that it does not take work.  The work is part of the process to get to the point where you live the good life.  The idea is to make it so that it really is not work anymore.

11.Take a break from the good life to mentor others on how to achieve the good life

Now that you have achieved the good life it is time to pay it forward.  Use the knowledge that you have gained from this experience to help others.  Once you are there you will need something to do.  Other than refining and reworking your goals and idea of the good life.   Helping others will help to give you even more satisfaction.

How to avoid the I’ll Do it Tomorrow Syndrome

I'll to it Tomorrow SyndromeI started this post 3 months ago…  but keep getting hit with the I’ll do it tomorrow syndrome. Not really but how many times have you had that happen to you.  You want to start a project and have the idea for it written down or in your mind but then that is it.  It just sits there.  Every day you look at it or think about it and say wow that is a great idea.  But I will get to it tomorrow.  Then the next day comes.  You look at or think about it again.  Something “comes up” and you think I will work on that tomorrow.  Now you are stuck in an endless loop of I will do it tomorrow.  This just goes on and on for you and the tomorrow never actually comes.

More people than you think have this problem.  It could be that you have come down with a bout of laziness or that you just are not sure what people will think of your idea.   Then it becomes an excuse to not do it.

How do you get stuck

The question becomes how do you over come that.  At times procrastination can be a good thing it becomes a short term reward with more free time.   But when it becomes a perpetual thing it can and will negatively affect you and other parts of your life.  Putting things off can end up causing more stress in your life. The short term reward turns into a long time loss.  Once you are in that loop though it is extremely difficult to break free from the clutches of the I’ll do it tomorrow syndrome.

So go pour yourself a fresh cup of coffee and lets look at some ways to get over the I’ll do it tomorrow syndrome.  (can also be applied to any other forms of procrastination you have going on out there)  🙂

Alight now that your are back with that cup of coffee – CHUG IT AND LETS GET GOING!!!!!!  no not really but lets get going.

Avoid getting stuck in the I’ll to it tomorrow Syndrome

Make a change in the way you to things – It can be a simple change to get started.  Change the way you drive to work.  Change your routine in the morning when you get up.  Eat something different.  Just make it something that changes what you are doing in the morning.  This will actually get your brain synapses to fire differently and lead you toward breaking your normal routine.  Many times when people are stuck in a loop it is their routine that is keeping them from getting out of that loop.

Quit Saying I’ll Do it Tomorrow –   Change it to I’ll Start it now!  Every time that you feel yourself starting to put something off think to yourself today is when I am going to start.  Don’t care about what you are going to be doing tomorrow.  Care about what you are doing today.  Changing one word in your thought process will make a world of difference.  I’ll Start it NOW!

Do it now!

Baby Steps – Making the small changes and easing yourself into the new task that you are aiming to achieve.  For some people going full in will work.  For most people it will just overwhelm them and they will revert back to their old ways very quickly.

Create a to to list with a detailed time line – this goes along with splitting tasks up into smaller pieces.  If you just set a deadline you are setting yourself up to fall back into a mode of procrastination and falling back into the I’ll Do It Tomorrow Syndrome.  This way you will be able to set smaller goals that will lead to the finished produce.  Setting smaller goals will help to give you that satisfied feeling of accomplishment and keep you on track.  Once you get used to doing this you will see a noticeable decline in how much you procrastinate.

Eliminate Pot Holes no one Likes those anyway

Eliminate Procrastination Pot Holes – a procrastination pot hole is something that distracts you from what ever task you are trying to complete.  It could be anything and more than likely it will be different for different people.  Are there certain web pages that you frequent a lot.  Say Facebook or You Tube or for me Slashdot.  I can always justify going to Slashdot.

I mean hey I am just keeping up on the latest news out there.  In order to combat this make it more difficult for you to get to those pages.  If you are going to them from a bookmark make the bookmark more difficult to get to.  If you really have trouble use parental controls on your computer and block that site.  A bit extreme maybe but effective.  If you always have the TV on and you say hey I am just using it as background noise.  Turn it off.  If you really want some back ground noise put on the radio or stream some music.

Stop Over Complicating things – it is very easy to turn a simple objective into something that seems much more daunting.  It is also easy to wait for the perfect time to accomplish a task.  I have news for you.  There is never a perfect time.  There is always something else going on.  So change your way of thinking.  The perfect time is now.  If you keep waiting for that “perfect time”  it leads you to that perfect excuse to fall back into the I’ll Do It Tomorrow Syndrome.  Really this isn’t rocket science, and even if it was, get over it and jump into it today.  Lets do this.

You Can Do it

I hope that some of these tips have helped you.  None of this stuff is ground breaking.   Most of you have probably already read some of these.  That is okay.   Really sometimes it just takes one thing to get someone motivated to get things done.  If you stay in the I’ll Do It Tomorrow Syndrome form of procrastination you will be cause yourself more stress.  Once you get into it and keep at it you will form some great habits and that will lead to better productivity.  If you haven’t yet check out our post about motivation and life.  Something will click.  Lets get it going today.

Staying Focused The True Task

Staying Focused on the task you are trying to accomplishStaying Focused for many people is one of the most difficult obstacles to over come.  At times when you are trying to complete just about any task your mind wanders and the distractions come easily.  Sometimes it is from lack of motivation.  Other times it is just because you are stuck spinning your wheels.  Luckily there are a few simple steps you can follow that will help you to stay focused and motivated to get that task completed.  It may not be easy the first time but after you get the first task accomplished the next one will be all that much easier.


Clear All Unnecessary Distractions

Distractions are a huge problem with it comes to staying focused.  Sometimes being distracted is a good thing.  It can help to clear your mind and possibly reduce stress.  Other times being distracted can prevent you from getting s task accomplished and staying focused. Which could then lead to more procrastination and more stress because you are not getting the things done that you are working toward.

Clearing the clutter of distractions around you can help you to stay focused.  Some people say you need to clear the distractions completely from your life.    Maybe they are right more than likely it is a balance between the distractions and removing them.  There are certain things that I am not willing to give up.  Like oh say television.  I really quite enjoy watching different shows.  Somehow I always seem to end up on the Food Network.

The first thing you need to do is identify what the distractions are that keep you from staying focused.

Just to get your mind flowing here are a few distraction I have identified.

Television – I am not going to stop watching but have modified my television viewing

Internet – this is s a little more difficult since I have access to it all the time – See Breaking old habits

Video Games – I switched from playing games that took a lot of time to arcade style games that are quick to play.  Just for a little break at times

Drama – Drama can be one of the most damaging things to confidence motivation and focus.  It can not always be avoided but you can control how you react to it and whether you participate in it or not.


Keep a Journal

For me writing things down has made it much easier when working on staying focused.  Especially writing goals down so that I can keep track of my progress.   One of the things that you need to figure out is are you a digital or analog person.  If you like the feel of paper then stick with that if you are a digital person and are happy typing.  There are plenty of places that you can keep track of things on line.

I use Google Docs a lot for this.  This makes it so that I always have access to my notes and easy to share documents with people if I need to do that.  If you are a paper person then get yourself a nice notebook or a journal book.  It is nice to have it all together in one place.  Make it something that is easy for you to carry around with you.

I would recommend that you write in it every day.  You may not have to come up with new ideas to put in it.  Writing down your progress on the goals that you have set will help you to stay focused and possibly even come up with some new ideas.  It will also give you some organisation and a sense of accomplishment.   The better you feel about things the more you will be able to achieve.

It would also be helpful to write down other things in the journal.  Anything about your life that you are proud of or feel that you need to improve upon.  These items could include


It can include anything you want.  These are just some examples of what I use.


Break Old Bad Habits and Create New Good Habits

Habits are one of the hardest things to change.  They are called habits for a reason.  Research has shown that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit.  In my experience it takes longer than that or at least it feels longer to break a bad habit.  It is not a good idea to just try to brake an old habit.  You should replace it with a good habit.  This will increase your chances of success.  Leaving a void will just make you want to stick with that old bad habit.

Lets say you wan to decrease the amount of money you spend each month.  We can replace that habit of spending too much money with making a habit to save more money.  A good habit that most of us may want to achieve.  For me it was buying too many “designer” coffees.  I call them liquid candy bars.  They are oh so good.   I was getting way to many of them each week.  I was spending about $20 a week on these things.

While I liked them I did not realize how much I was spending on them till I actually sat down and figured out how many I was getting a week.  It was just habit for me to stop and pick one up as I drive by every day.   So I decided to just drink the black coffee (which I like as much as the liquid candy bar) and then force myself to drive by the coffee shop.  The good habit I developed with the help of my bank.  So that it looked like my account was going down the same amount as before.  I set up an automatic transfer of $20 each week to move money from my checking account to my savings account.  Not a huge change but it has made a difference.

The key here is to figure out your bad habit(s) you want to change and come up with a good habit to replace it.


Surround Yourself With People That Have Similar Goals

People with similar goals are going to help you get to the point of staying focused more quickly.  If you are around people that have no interest in what your goals are then they are going to become a distraction rather then helpful.

This can be very difficult to do.  A good example of this is pro athletes.   How many times have you heard about a player that has made millions of dollars during their career file for bankruptcy.   Some numbers say as many as 50% of the players in pro sports run out of money with in 5 years of retirement  Part of the problem they are finding is that the players were never able to identify the friends from their past that were really just money friends.  If someone that you have been around for a long time either in a relationship or a friend from long ago is bringing you down.  As hard as it is if you want to stay focused and reach your goals you may have to make the choice to move on from them.


Break Up Your Task in to Smaller Tasks

If you have a large goal it may be very difficult to stay focused.  The end result may seem out of reach.  If you break the task up in to smaller tasks you will get that rewarding feeling much sooner and it will help you to stay focused on the end result.

Say your task is to write a 100 page paper.  One Hundred pages is a lot.  At least for me it is.  But if you brake it up into smaller chunks then you can set many smaller goals.  It is easier to get to 5 pages then to 100.  Another thing that you can do by braking things up is to allow yourself to take brakes and to reward yourself for hitting the goal.  Rewards are remarkable motivators no matter how small the reward is.    I love to play arcade style games.  So while I was writing this every time I got one of the sections done I played a game of Candy Crush.  I know silly right?  Not really it actually worked and I was able to get this done.

None of the stuff in this post is ground braking.  But sometimes when working on staying focused you have to see it a few times to have it sink in.    I hope that some or all of the tips helped.  Drop me a note in the comments if any of these were helpful to you.

Get Motivated – Stand up Straight Embrace who you are

It is not always easyWhile we at bitojava fully believe in the power of coffee,  I am sure you all had difficulty figuring that out….  LOL .  The truth is that is takes more than black liquid gold to motivate you and give you the confidence to get motivated.  There are many factors that play into building confidence and leading to you being motivated to get something done.  It really does not matter what it is.  It can be something big or something small.  So that comes to the question what are some simple things that you can do easily to get your motivation juices flowing?

Easy to lose focus

As I was starting to write this my mind was wandering around.  Which of course led to day dreaming which brought me to what would I do if I won the lottery…  See it is easy to get distracted.   Getting off track leading to lack of motivation and get things done.  While there is no sure fire way that will work every time there are different things you can try that will help to motivate you.  Sometime well maybe many times it is difficult to find those things even if it is something simple or something you have done before.

You will get motivated with these ideas.

Start the day with a positive attitude.  I know that this is not always an easy thing to do.  Many times it is difficult.  Really it is something that you can control.  You may not be able to control certain events in your life but you have complete control over how you react to them.   If you are a Monte Python fan you have hear the song Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.  Good way to start the day.  Good attitude can help your day start better and help you stay focused.

Get Motivated

  1. Set Large Goals and break them up into smaller bits.  You have the big picture but it seems like it is beyond attainable.  This can help lead to your lack of motivation.  If you break it up into smaller bits then you will achieve those smaller goals and help keep you motivated to get to the bigger goal.  Simple example:  Writing a blog post.  The whole post may seem overwhelming.  But one paragraph is a much smaller bit.  Much easier to attain.  Heck sometimes I have to break it down to “Just get one word written”  Many times after that it is off to the races and I get a bunch done
  2. Overcome your fear of failure or don’t be afraid to fail.  The fear of failure is a huge anti motivational tool.   If you never do it then you can not fail.  Everyone fails at many points in their life.  From big things to small things.  The reason people succeed is because they kept at it no matter how many times the failed till they reached success.
  3. Stand up or sit up straight and embrace who you are.  Studies have shown that good posture can help lead to a better attitude which can help to give you the confidence to get things done.    Think about it.  It makes sense.  When you are slouching or hunched over compared to when you are standing up straight.  Something simple that everyone can do.  Many times you do not even realize you are doing it.  It takes a conscious effort at first but after a while you will just do it.
  4. Eliminate distraction as much as possible.  When there are a lot of distractions then it is much easier to get off track and lose focus.  Try to keep your work area as distraction free as possible.  If you are in an office try closing your door.  If you are at home and have the TV on all the time try turning it off.  Make your work area for the task you are trying to accomplish.
  5. Do something that you enjoy.  Doing something that makes you happy will lead to getting more done.   If you are doing something that you do not enjoy it will make it much more difficult to get things done.  How many times have you just sat and thought about how much you did not want to do something?  It has happened to me many times.  Then when it gets to something that is fun it just comes to me and BAM the project is finished.  Well maybe not like that but it is fun.

You are in control. We use these ideas.   You should use these ideas to get motivated too. Other times it will be a combination of things.  Each time it may be different.

Motivation, Life and Coffee

Motivation, Life and Coffee.  Success in life can be simpler than you think.

What motivates you in life?   Something has to motivate you.   It may not always be easy to figure it out.   You may just be going through the motions and the thing that motivates you may be right in front of your face.  Do you know what it is?

  • How do you figure out what it is?  
  • What is it that you like to do?  
  • What is it that you don’t like to do?

There are thousands of places on the internet and even more books that claim to help you figure out what it is that you want to do with your life. Have you tried any of them?  Were you successful?  Probably not.  But I bet you have thought about it or tried it.

Success is the direct result of action.

With out action you have Zero chance of being successful.  The lottery can bring you money and success.  Not very likely but it is possible.  But to give yourself an opportunity at that success you have to initiate action.  That action is as simple as buying a ticket.  Not difficult to do,  there are likely  many places that you pass each day that you could stop in and buy that ticket.  Yet most people don’t do it.  I am not advocating that you buy a ticket to the lottery and count on winning to achieve your financial goals.  The point is that taking action even when it is a simple action, is still difficult.Who has said I will do it tomorrow

Everyone has said “I could do that today but will wait till tomorrow”.  It turns into end endless loop of tomorrows.  Have you ever heard of Joe’s Crab Shack?  There is a sign on the side of it that says “Free Crab Tomorrow”  Yet tomorrow never comes.

Motivation to get things done

Figure it out what you like and take hold of it.  The true path to enjoying your life is to find what you are passionate  about and do that.  It is more likely that you are going to be successful if you are doing something you like.  Than if you are just stuck going through the motions because that is what you have always done.

What motivates you

Motivation – Discover What you want to do, this has to be something that is reasonable.  Of course it would be great to find a place on the beach and sit there all day.  But for what you want to do it that reasonable.

Life – Take action.  If you find that one thing it may lead to other things.  This will help to lead you to happiness.

Coffee – this is the reward for doing what you want to do.  For us being able to try many different kinds of coffee is part of living our dream

A Review of Javita Weightloss Coffee & Tea

I’m not usually an instant coffee drinker, but when Sandi from Javita was kind enough to send me some samples, I was more than happy to give it a try.  She sent me the Burn + Control, Energy + Mind and Lean + Green.

Javita Coffee comes  in nice single serving packets.  The top is easy to tear off.  Each of them have a slightly different smell.  The powder is very fine and it looks like each one of them will easily dissolve in the water.  I tried several different methods of mixing the coffee with water.  (Hot water, Cold water and mixing it into hot coffee.)

The first packet I tried was the Energy + Mind.  I thought that this would be a good choice since I am getting up there in age and they always say the mind is the first thing to go. Since I need more energy in the morning, I thought that this would be the best time to try Javita and that the mind helping effects would help me through out the day.

It is a good thing that the packets are easy to open since I am not at my best when I first get up in the morning.  I put the powder into a coffee mug and added the water to it.  The water was hot but not boiling.   As soon as the mug was filled with about 8 oz. of water, the powder had already started to dissolve on its own.  There was still a little powder on top so I stirred it for about 30 seconds and the rest of the powder dissolved into the water.

The first sip had a little bit of a bitter taste to it.  After that it seemed to mellow out a bit. The taste was kind of a mix between coffee and tea.  It didn’t take long for the energy effect of the tea to kick in.  Before the cup was half way gone, I was fully awake.  After drinking the rest of the cup, the energy effect that I was feeling stayed the same, lasting for at least a few hours.  The only complaint that I had was that first sip tasted bitter to me, which may have been an after effect of my stirring method.  The next day my method for mixing the powder was the same except rather than water I used hot coffee.   The bitter taste from the first sip was not there and the energy effect was the same as the day before when I only used water.

Next, I tried the Lean + Green.  Of the three this was my favorite one.  I used the same method of preparation as I did with the Mind + Energy.  With the Lean + Green, there was no bitter taste on the first sip and the flavor stayed strong through the whole mug.  The Energy boost was there but not quite as strong as the Mind + Energy.  If you are a drinker of Green Tea, you will really like this one.

The third packet I tried was the Burn + Control.  This Coffee helps you speed up your body’s fat-burning processes & help you control your appetite.  Again, the packet when dumped into the hot water dissolved completely very quickly.  On the first sip it did have a slightly bitter taste like the Energy + Mind.  On further sips, the bitter taste lessened.  The energy boost from the Burn + Control was significant.

I would recommend all three of these, especially if you are in a hurry in the morning or if you are just looking for a good taking energy pick me up through out the day.

Keyboard Shortcuts

KeyboardKeyboard shortcuts can help you to increase your productivity and do some things much more easily than you can with the mouse.  The problem is that many people do not realize that there are keyboard shortcuts available.  They are easy to use if you know what you are looking at. There are simple two key commands and three and four key commands to help you be more productive.  All of them work on Windows 7 and many of them work on other versions of windows.

If you look at your keyboard you will see the windows key on the bottom row.  It is usually the windows logo with a circle around it.

Ripped Cream Lean Vanilla Bean Creamer

I’m usually not one to add anything to my coffee.  I like coffee in my coffee.  So I went into trying Ripped Cream with a sense that I would not like it.  Ripped Cream Lean Vanilla Bean Creamer has changed the way I look at my morning coffee.  It looks like I was just adding the wrong stuff to my coffee before.

Ripped Cream Vanilla

I decided that the best way to try the Ripped Cream Vanilla would be to try it first thing in the morning.  While first thing in the morning made it difficult to get things going, it would make a good test to see how the Ripped Cream tasted and  how it would affect my day.


I broke out the bag of the Lean Vanilla Bean Creamer.

Ripped Cream Lean Vanilla Bean Creamer is a great way to start the day.  Adding the two Tea Spoons of the creamer to your coffee in the morning definitely gives you a quick energy boost.   The bag was very easy to open even in my early morning not quite awake yet state.  The Powder was very fine and had a very distinct smell of Vanilla.

I grabbed one of my larger mugs so that I would not spill the coffee while mixing  the powder into the Coffee.


I then added the coffee to the Creamer that I had put in the cup.  Make sure that you stir it in very well.  The first go around I did not stir it well enough and had some residue left in the bottom of the cup.

The first sip of coffee gave me a very strong taste of Vanilla.  I am a huge fan of Vanilla to this was very nice.  As I continued to drink the strong taste did not go away.  I had put two heaping spoons of the creamer in the cup so after drinking about half the cup I topped it off with more coffee.  It gave me a little stronger coffee flavor but could still taste the Vanilla.  There was no bitter taste and not chalky taste that is associated with many of these protein drinks.

After finishing the cup I was left with a full but not over full feeling as if I had ate breakfast.

Over all I would give the Ripped Cream Lean Vanilla Bean Creamer a 5 out of 5.  It holds up very well and works exactly as advertised.

Banana Coffee Muffins

Thursday nights recipe is Banana Coffee Muffins

1/3 cup melted butter
4 ripe bananas, smashed
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 tablespoons strong Bit O Java coffee
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch salt
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup chopped pecans, toasted or raw


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Grease a 12 cup capacity muffin tin or use paper liners.

With a wooden spoon, mix butter into the mashed bananas in a large mixing bowl. Mix in the sugar, egg, coffee and vanilla. Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the mixture and mix in. Add the flour, mix until it is just incorporated. Fold in the chopped pecans. Pour mixture into a prepared muffin tin. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes. Cool on a rack.

*Cook’s note: To check to see if the muffins are done; with a toothpick insert into the center of a muffin, if it comes out clean, it’s done.

Rogers Roasters – Galilee Decaf Coffee

Rogers Roasters was kind enough to send us some of their Galilee Decaf Coffee to review.

Not being much of a decaf drinker, I decided to get my parents involved with this review.  They are both coffee lovers and tend to drink Decaf coffee.  So  I loaded up the family in the car and headed up to my parents house.  Coffee has always been a huge part of that fabric of my family.  My parents both always like their cup of Coffee and my Dad seems to have a cup in his hand at all times of the day, so they are always interested in trying new coffee.

As we, opened up the Galilee Decaf ,the smell of the coffee beans quickly filled up the room, even before grinding.  Although the Roast is listed as a Regular Roast , they were pretty dark.  All of the beans all looked to be pretty close in color and size and there did not appear to be any burnt beans.

As we ground the beads , the house was filled with a wonderful coffee aroma.  Maybe it’s just me, but usually the Decaf beans seem to have a much more subtle smell. Fortunately, with Galilee Decaf, this was not the case.

We used a Hamilton Beach Two way drip Coffee Brewer to make the coffee.  With a two way brewer you can make a 12 cup pot of coffee and a single serving cup.  Since some of our guests at the tasting preferred their coffee stronger than others, we used this method to please everyone.

The Results of Our Tasting Were:

Color: Beans were a dark roast, evenly done with oils apparent .

Aroma: 5/5   Strong house filling aroma when brewing.

Bitterness (1=very bitter 5=Sour): 3.2/ 5    If you like strong Coffee this one is for you If you want less strong decrease the amount of coffee you put in to brew

Taste:    4.4/5    Some heavy flavors ,smokey with heavy Earth tones.

Drinkability: 4.6/5  Very strong on the finish.


In total this is good strong coffee and ALL of these coffees are certified Kosher and available from Rogers Family Coffee Company separately or as a basket set. If you like Decaf and want a strong “wake up” cup, this is for you!
